Three months ago I thought this placement would teach me how a big company runs. Instead I spent a chunk of it building an AI-assisted tool from scratch, presenting it to a full team, nervous the whole way through — and watching people actually want to use it. That's taught me more about AIgnite than anything I'd read.
What I Actually Built
I can't get into specifics — that's my employer's business, not mine to share — but the shape of it is simple: a manual, recurring process was eating hours every week, with nothing tying the information together. Over three months I connected the data, cleaned it up automatically, and added an AI-assisted step suggesting the next action instead of leaving someone to figure it out by hand each time.
Last week I presented it properly, to the whole team. It went better than I let myself expect. I wrote a bit more about the specific build on LinkedIn if you want the technical detail.
The Bit That Actually Surprised Me
I assumed the hard part would be the tech — Power Automate, Power Query, getting an AI prompt to behave sensibly. It wasn't.
The hard part was understanding the messy, human version of the process well enough to actually automate it properly. The exceptions nobody writes down. The bit someone always does slightly differently. Skip that step, and you've just built something that looks clever and helps no one.
This isn't just my experience — the wider research on speed and response backs up why getting this right matters so much: responding to a customer within five minutes rather than thirty produces roughly 21 times higher conversion. Understanding why a delay happens is the actual work. The automation is just the last step.
Why This Matters for AIgnite
A big company can afford months and a whole team to get this right. A one-man garage or a local electrician can't. But the underlying discipline — understand the real problem first, then build the smallest thing that actually fixes it — doesn't change with the size of the business.
It's exactly what I've written about before: North East small businesses are already losing ground on AI adoption, not because the ideas are too complicated, but because nobody's building them at a price and pace that works for a business this size.
Every hour I've spent this placement learning to translate a messy real process into something an AI can actually act on makes AIgnite's own tools — the missed-call responder, the revenue calculator now live on this site — genuinely better, not just similar in theory.
The Honest Bit
A three-month placement doesn't make me an expert. What it's given me is real, tested Power Platform experience, a Google Data Analytics Certificate alongside it, and proof — not theory — that AI only works when you understand people first and code second.
